Boko Haram Strikes In Yola Mosque, Kills 27, Injures 96

Bomb blastNo fewer than 27 people were confirmed to have been killed today in a Yola Mosque, Adamawa state when members of the deadly Boko Haram struck with bomb explosion.
The explosion occurred at Jambutu Mosque during Friday’s Juma’at prayer.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed, that 96 people sustained various degree of injuries and have been evacuated to Federal Medical Centre, Yola and the Specialist Hospital, Jimeta, both in Adamawa State.
The mosque was newly renovated and opened and the prayer today was the first after its re-opening. It is located in the Jambutu area of Yola.
The blast, suspected to be from a suicide bomber, occurred at about 2pm, shortly after the Imam of the mosque concluded reading the sermon for the Juma’at prayer.
An eyewitness, who simply identified himself as Umaru, said: “It was a young boy who attempted to get into the mosque when the explosive went off.
“It’s a new Friday mosque. This is the first Friday prayer to be offered in the mosque.
“Over 100 people have so far been evacuated to hospital but I can’t say how many among them are dead.”
The Police spokesman in the state, DSP Othman Abubakar, and the Executive Secretary of the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency, Alhaji Haruna Furo, confirmed the incident and said rescue effort was still going on.
They said that the number of casualty was yet to be ascertained.
“We are now evacuating those affected to Yola Specialist Hospital and Federal Medical Centre,” Furo said.
Today blast was the third in Yola within the past six months, the first being near Yola Central Market, followed by the one at Malkohi Internally Displace Persons’ camp. [myad]
