Suspected IPOB In Gun Battle With Police In Anambra, Steal Weapons

Gunmen suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) have gone full blown war in Nnewi, Anambra State, engaging in gun battle with the police and carting away their weapons.

The gunmen, riding in seven vehicles, today, August 9, stormed the Nnewi Police Area Command, in Anambra state and overpowered the few officers on duty in a shootout and made away with the weapons.

The station is located on the Okigwe Road area of Umudim, Nnewi.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Anambra State, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, insisted that the policemen repelled the attackers. He said that police and other security agencies are now at the beleaguered station to secure it.

This was even as a resident of the area who preferred anonymity said that they heard heavy gunshots around the area command at about 2.pm today.

“We gathered that the shooting was between unidentified gunmen and police at Nnewi Police Area Command and that caused pandemonium amongst the residents of Nnewi community.”
